Yay, I was able to get out part two of my art history series. Unfortunately, I tried to type out cosed captions and discovered I am unable to type out all the words in a timely and accurate manner. I tried to do it today and it took me over two hours of making mistakes and then finally ending it before I was done. To check it out here is My Art History ;Painting video here.
Thank you to those wanting closed captions. I wholeheartedly wish I could just click on a button and it would automatically transcribe the script. If anyone is interested in volunteering to transcribe the audio to create closed captions, please feel free to message or email us. Until then, I will continue trying to be mindful of using descriptive titles and/or text to help explain what's happening. And try to type out more in the accompanying vlogs. These days my energy levels are a cause for concern. Always happy just to get the videos completed at all.

Hi guys! This is a short video talking about trying the Born Pretty chameleon nail art powders and flakes. Adding them to black or very dark polymer clay works the best. Theses pigments are amazingly beautiful. It is hard to believe that one powder or flakes can shimmer with two or more colours. It all depends on how the light hits the surface. Over the course of my artistic career, I made the water spray bottle my number one tool to keep my palette wet and juicy. Otherwise the acrylics would for that plastic skin, eventually drying out completely rendering the useless! As mentioned in the palette talk
The biggest problem with Acrylic paints and oils are their inability to be reactivated once dry or video previously, I tried a wet palette that is sealable but found it too big, The idea we saw at this great channel, offered the great idea to make your own wet palette. Please check his videos out here at CLIVE5ART. Personally, we both prefer the method mentioned in the Palette Talk video.
But it would be great if we could find a palette that can be sealed. Craig and I would use a ziploc bag around a makeshift palette, like a disposable plastic or styrofoam plate. Even though we ziploc it, there is always a risk that the paint will dry out. As you will soon see, wasting precious, expensive artist paint is one of my biggest fear as an artist. When I was shopping on Ebay.ca (I live in Canada). I was surprised to discover a sealable paint palette. So I thought I bet this would work for Craig when he uses the acrylics. Here is the link in Ebay to find it.
We received it after about 3 weeks. That is pretty good from China to Canada, Shipping was free, the cost about 17 dollars Canadian. I see today it's 15 dollars. Go figure. The first test would be to put paint in it and see if it truly does seal. You will have to watch the video to see what we discovered. One warning, ALWAYS read the size details before ordering online!

Hi guys! Well I know the focus at HeArtfully Creating has been polymer clay, because that reflects where my main creative juices have been flowing into these last few years. You know what I mean! However, illustrating/drawing and painting were my number one focus or medium. And yes, painting in three dimensions, using polymer clay so to speak, has become my newest method of art making, but I still do enjoy drawing in two dimensions. However, modern technology has lead me to digital illustration. More on that in a future post.
But for today, I wanted to share a Celebration of Illustration in a video compilation of my hand drawn illustrations. Some were for fun, for gifts and because I was commissioned to illustrate for cook books and learning materials.
All of what you are about to see were created using either fine tipped permanent marker, pencil, coloured pencil, and/or coloured markers.

Hello everyone! Hope you're having a very creative day. This has been something I have wanted to share for along time. I was so excited to discover These powders on Ebay.ca, that I ended up ordering a little here and there - meant it took a while for them all to arrive. In fact, when I get crazy about a newly discovered art making medium like that, I ended up with doubles and extras. Which is fine, because a lot of them were more sample sizes anyway. And trust me, This powders And flakes Are just so stunning, You kind of want all that you can get - In every color that is.
Once again, The nail art world, Impacts the polymer clay world. As many polymer clay artists will tell you, worlds definitely collide when it comes to polymer clay surface techniques. If you saw my actual fingernails, Oh wait you can when you watch my videos, You will see Just how awful my fingernails are. So clearly I don't buy nail art "Stuff" For My actual nails.
These powders are called mirror chrome powders, as well I've heard the term Chameleon used as well. The names may vary depending on who is selling them. As you will see in the video below, I have three of the same color, but each of them are a different "Powder." In fact one is an amazing Flake version, Another is a coarser grind called glitter powder (Reminds me of ultrafine glitter), And the other is the chrome powder (Reminds me of mica powder.) Now I do not think that These are mica powder based, If you know anything more about it please let me know. Because of the flake options, I think it might be synthetically made. Doesn't matter, There stunningly gorgeous.
Why So gorgeous?
Because depending on how the light hits the surface, You actually have two colors in one. I did the best that I can, to show that in the video below. It's tricky trying to capture the amazing Effects With my camera, But I think you get the idea.

Below is the video. It is meant to offer some ideas and inspire you to give metal leaf a try while using polymer clay.
Childhood Art Making Memory... Sgraffito is one of the techniques I will be talking about. It is about scratching an image into the surface, revealing what is underneath. In fact, it was my dear Dad who first taught me scratch art (that is what we called it back then,). I suggest trying this method. We would cover a sheet of paper with a variety of colours using crayons. Then, using a heavy black oil pastel or a crayon that can coat the colours well. Then taking a metal scratching tool, like an eyeglass screw driver, start removing the black layer. That will reveal the colour underneath. I would just make lines and designs or you can draw an objective image. Watch the video below to learn what Objective and non-objective art is.

If you are new or have returned for more fun, here at HeArtfully Creating, Welcome! I know it has been a while, But I finally have had a chance to put together a new video To hopefully inspire you to make your own polymer clay texture Making tools. That means they can be in a roller, sheet, or plate form. Because I am I was experimenting learning, You will see that I have tried Some variations. Since I love making my own texture tools, I have decided to make a three or four part series on the subject. Otherwise the video that goes with this article, would be way too long. Personally I find it easier to watch shorter videos in a series as opposed to a really long single video. I would love to hear what you think. It's much easier to focus on one or two pieces than my entire collection all at once.
Before we begin here is the video that goes with this article.
Tools You Need 💕1. Scrap polymer clay. Note: Now is a good time to use cheaper clays like Sculpey 3, or clays you do not like as much, That you happen to have lying
around. Also a good times to use up Colour Blends That you really don't like.
💕2. Sculpting tools. As well as Purchased tools. Use whatever you think will work best to make the shapes and textures that you want. If you're new to polymer clay and do not have An addiction to buying Clay tools, Like I do, Add want to save money, you can actually accomplish pretty much the same end result by using use items you would find around the house. For example: toothpicks, Knitting needles, Crochet hooks, dental tools (I was able to acquire some from a hygienist who is going to throw her tools away), Popsicle sticks, Skewers, Icing Tips for cake decorating, Screwdriver tips, Utensils....Just make sure whenever you use Stays dedicated for clay only.... NOTE: Because some plastics React to Polymer clay, Be careful not to leave whatever household item, you may be using In contact with the clay for extended periods of time. Metal And glass As well as wood, Are all safe. 💕3. An acrylic roller. Again if you're new polymer clay, You can use anything that we'll roll out your clay. You can use Metal cannoli forms, I wouldn't dowel, A smooth pen Or pencil. And for those who have the supplies, You can use the roller or the pasta machine. Again a reminder that anything used with Polymer clay, can't be used for food items after.
Polymer clay is not toxic, But, It is not recommended that you interchange tools That you would use for food preparation Or eating. 💕4. A dedicated baking pan For baking your texture sheets/rollers.
💕5. A ceramic tile Or a piece of glass that can be put in the oven To work and bake on. 💕6. Card stock Or file folder. 💕7. Tinfoil Or an aluminum baking pan that fits As a lid On the pan you will be baking your clay in. 💕8. Baby Wipes 💕9. Water spritzer 10. For A roller or rocker style, use a toilet paper tube, or a metal tube shape covered with wax paper. Most important, Your creativity!
Beginning
I like to work in a freestyle manner. If you have a specific design or texture or image you would like, then be sure to jot down your ideas in your sketchbook.
Foundation:
In this video you see that I am making a roller style texture tool. I wrapped wax paper onto a metal tube used for nail art. Using tape holds it well. Then I roll out polymer clay and in this case I added and shaped pieces as I wanted. Remember any texture left on the piece will appear on the raw clay you want to texture. So be sure to smooth out all that you want to be smooth.
Ready To Bake
Always bake on a dedicated baking pan, using a ceramic tile on top, with an insulating layer of card stock or a file folder. This helps distribute heat and avoid scorching.
Once your roller or rocker is ready. It is important to not bake your piece on a flat surface or you will have flat spots. I use bunches of tissue including toilet paper. Make a nice bed of soft kleenex or t/p. You can use quilting batting as well. At 275 degrees fahrenheit, these products will not burn. Make sure they do not touch the element. Lay your pieces down.
Tent It.
To help contain fumes and to avoid scorching, always use an oven thermometer to insure your oven is to temperature. As well tent some tinfoil over top or lay an aluminium cake pan on top.
I always bake my pieces at east one hour, even if thin. It makes it stronger.
When baked, let cool. And you are ready!
Using Your Texture Sheets and Tools:
For those of us with weakened hands like I do, we can still work with clay but we need to modify techniques at times. For instance, many tutorials talk about how you need to stand up and look straight down when slicing a cane or pressing on a texture stamp. In my case, I use a wheelchair and standing isn't an option. So, it just means that I need to be extra careful to slice straight down from a seated position. And regarding textures or rubber stamps, I have been learning that because we can't stand up, for leverage and to apply pressure, making a roller style texture stamp works better. I did try a rocker style stamp as you will see in the videos, but I still wasn't strong enough to apply pressure by rocking it back and forth. On that note, I find pressing the clay down onto the stamp or flat plate works best. Using your finger tips, pushing it carefully into the nooks and crannies. Just be careful it doesn't stick by using water or corn starch or even better...Baby Oil....
BABY OIL TIP: Baby oil has more than one use. I use it in small quantities to condition rock hard clay. In fact because my hands are weak, if clay is too stiff, I work in a bit of baby oil to soften it up. Maybe I will make a tutorial about that in the future. Regarding texture tools made from polymer clay, to avoid clay sticking to my polymer clay texture tools is, rub a light coating of baby oil onto the stamp or roller's surface. No only does it smell great, it kind of keeps the clay made sheets and such in a non-stick state. It reminds me of how you condition or season a cast iron pan or wok.

Hi guys! I just wanted to share A pair of faux knitted square stud earrings that I recently made for fun. After watching some photo knitting Techniques and polymer clay, I tried and tried and couldn't seem to get it to look like knitting.
After some more learning, I figured out what I was doing wrong.
So please learn from my mistake, I'm going to post a couple of video Tutorials So you can learn how to create the faux knitting look in clay.
My mistake? Make sure you twist the two strands of clay in one direction, twisting away from you and then the second set of strands, twist towards you, laying them down side by side, in alternating directions.
That way when you lay them side-by-side they will look like the knitted look you're going for. For the longest time I was stumped and didn't get it, I'm a slow learner. The key is to not give up. Once you get that part, it is a very Simple technique that looks real. We all know that knitted items are soft and squishy. So when you touch these, Of course they are not.
To Make The Pink Square Studs that I Did You Need...
💗 A set of earring studs with backs that have a flat disc to attach clay to
💗 2 complimentary colours of Polymer Clay of your own choosing
💗 Krazy Glue or a strong bonding glue OR, you can push the post base into the clay in it's unbaked state and bake it on
💗 Mica Powder for Sparkle
💗 Straight blade cutter
💗 Needle tool
What Next?
💗 Watch the video tutorials below to learn how to "knit" with clay. The smaller you roll out the strips of clay, the smaller your "knitting" stitches will be. In the videos below, are a few various sizes. MoClay's brooch stitches are about the closest to my stud square size.
Once you create a small sheet of "stitches," cut out matching squares. Mine are about 1cm x 1cm or 10mm x 10mm. I did not use a cookie cutter but if you have one, you can.
Then I laid each square onto a contrasting colour that I rolled out to the same thickness almost. Taking a straight blade, slice along all 4 side of your knitted square. Smooth it all out on the edges with your fingers.
💗Texturing: I took a needle tool and poked a texture into the back and sides of the coloured back.
💗Highlighting: Then I took a a hint of mica powder from the lid of my powder and highlighted wherever I thought best.
💗Bake face up, flat, on a piece of cardstock or paper on a ceramc tile, at the manufacturer's temperature for one hour. Yes, it says a shorter time on the package, but I have learned from other artists the clay is stronger when baked at least one hour even if it is thin. Or you can bake them on a crumpled up tissue if you want.
💗Once Cooled. I just squirted a bit of Krazy Glue on the center back and placedd the posts on. Let sit for a while.
Voila, all done!
