Couldn't resist sharing my newest petri dish technique pieces. Yes, more large heart pendants eventually for my Etsy Shop and some fun coasters. These pieces aren't very deep and yet really cool effects are still possible. So go ahead and try this technique!
Hard to believe we are five days away from that time of year that so many folks seem to stress out over. Instead of stress and and incurring debt, I would rather focus on sharing all things creative. Recently, I was dabbling in the newest resin trend, the Petri Dish technique. It it so addictive. There are a pile of great tutorials on the subject on YouTube, so this newest video is all about what my pieces ended up looking like and any lessons I learned.
You do need to use epoxy resin, freshly mixed. The longer it sits once mixed, the resin's curing process makes it a lot more difficult to impossible for the inks to do their thing, the thing that is called the petri dish effect.

As well, one big lesson learned was to not use my butane mini torch to eliminate bubbles in the resin, when using small silicone molds. The torch is too hot and the silicone actually burns, therefore ruining your molds and the piece you took time to create. Best way to remove those pesky bubbles in small molds is to use a lighter flame or heat gun, or if you can make it work, a straw that you blow through. That last one never seems to work well for me. Drool tends to dominate, running down the straw, about to ruin the resin.

Materials Required
Silicone molds
Fresh mixed Epoxy Resin - I use Art Resin right now
Alcohol Inks that are not mixatifs or opaque
White opaque alcohol ink - it seems that Pinata by Jacquard is used most
Pipettes if you need to draw ink from a larger bottle of ink
A matt to keep our surface from staining
A heat gun or flame if you want the bubbles removed (do that before adding alcohol inks - alcohol is flammable!)
A dust cover to keep pieces clean while curing

Hello everybody! Hope you are having a satisfying Saturday. It seems like it's been along time since I made a new tutorial. Well this one is another one of those practical Polymer clay Projects. Or as I like to collect practiCLAY- Get it? Okay maybe not that funny, But I try.
My husband brought home some new oil bottles from one of our favourite stores Canadian Tire. Of course now that I use polymer clay, When I see plain glass or something smooth and shiny that can go in an oven, and yes even tin cans, wooden boxes, anything I can go In the oven at 275°F....I envision covering it with polymer clay somehow. Blank canvases, Waiting to be Decorated.
Blank surfaces, waiting to be decorated. Time flies by faster than one realizes. And "life" as it happens, doesn't always permit time for having fun.
But I made sure I got to have fun This past week. The smooth Boring glass oil bottles Look pretty good If I do say so myself, And so does my husband.

Now they watch the video, You'll notice that I didn't discuss how I protected the polymer clay decorations on the bottles.
Because this technique is the same one used to make window clingies, The words Olive and Canola, Could just peel right off. So I made sure That the words were cut out As one connected piece. Once it was all baked and cooled, I coated the surface with an epoxy resin. I did push the resin past some of the letters Onto the glass, Hoping it would make sure The decorations stay on okay.

I Made A Lot Of Resin Pieces That Day!
A way back I got to play around with epoxy resin for the first time. It takes patience and care and about 24 hours to fully cure and shouldn't be used if you are young. There are too many warnings about safety and I wouldn't want to cause any vulnerable persons to dive into a material that could cause some harm if not used correctly. At first I was a little paranoid about using it. It was because most of the tutorials I had watched prior to using it, were adamant about wearing gloves, having ventilation, and not getting it on your skin. However, I did loosen up once I became familiar with it and it did touch my skin. If that happens, wipe off right away. Baby wipes and rubbing alcohol with rags are your best friend when using resin and clay too. I look forward to working with it some more but haven't yet. So far...
It was a really fun first time and out of that resulted some really cool potential pendant pieces (See above), at least that was my intent when designing and making them. Using silicone molds, I poured the resin in along with polymer clay inclusions that I made, such as the orange leaves below. The word inclusion was something I have learned about from watching Christi Friesen's tutorials. Check her out, she's a mighty artistic inspiration.

art places (mine are usually from Ebay and Amazon), have held up fine in the oven at 275 degrees Fahrenheit. Yet, mostly all the tutorials I have watched, say only use glass and crystals. If you are are not sure, you try on a scrap piece before using acrylic/resin pieces for inclusions.
It took a while to transform my square into something spectacular, but I finally did. If you see the photo where the piece is in it's simplest beginnings, I then embellished the square resin and clay piece into a more interesting, hopefully beautiful pendant with a bale made from wire,(another idea from another jewellery artist, Keepsake Crafts). As well, the polymer clay decorative addition was textured and accented with beads and mica powder.
Thanks to so many great tutorials, I also learned how to make my own end caps, again thanks to Patricia Roberts -Thompson. out of clay (those are the end parts holding the ribbon ends and clasp). Along with accent beads and using sari ribbons to suspend it on.

Yay, here is the video I mentioned last week about what I did with Pebeo Fantasy Paints! So far I love the cool effects they can create but, polymer clay remains my favourite medium. However, I definitely recommend trying out any new art making materials that you want. Creating is all about having fun. I recently told a frustrated young artist that making art is about having fun. and not something torturous. It was his first time drawing and I think he thought he had to create photograph like image. Hopefully he knows now that if he isn't enjoying art making, then maybe he's trying too hard! Relax, have fun and experiment with different media or art making tools. You may find something you jut love doing or find out you love a little this and a little that!
