Re-Organizing My Watercolour Palette

It's Only been a few months or so of trying to learn more about watercolour (in Canada colour is spelled with a "u"). Have I created any masterpieces yet? Nope. Not sure if any of you can relate to this, but I have an issue with collecting (purchasing) and organizing art supplies. Especially if it is a new medium like watercolour or a few years ago, polymer clay. This includes learning about these palettes I never tried before. When I first tried watercolour about thirty years ago, there was no such talk about this method of watercolour painting. It was all about using paint fresh from the tube. Nothing about using individual half or full pan holders where the paint purposefully dries. Once that happens, you just re-wet the pigments and paint.

Apparently this method prevents wasting of watercolour paint. I have been learning to appreciate the ability to re-wet the paint and use it to create those masterpieces.

This article is about re-organizing my new palette again. Trying to turn my 4 rows of pigment spots to 6 rows, eliminating the centre aisle. The idea to try this was from watching Kristy Rice videos. I noticed she has palettes packed full of paint colours. No need for a centre area. Will I finally get to painting with this variety of paints? Learn With Me Mixed Media -Alcohol Inks, Glitter, UV Resin And Such.

Hi guys! I was able to create another video regarding working with mixed media. It's a very long process so I didn't want to bore anyone by filming every step of the way. So this video is a bit more of a learn with me/tutorial as I ramble on about whatever pops into my head. Tried to edit some of that out, didn't think anyone would really want to hear too much about Star Trek versus Star Wars!

The materials that are used for this piece so far. That's right I am still tweaking it so it can't be considered done. In fact I've got some still shots then I'll be posting soon to see you what I've done since this video was made. It's just so much fun adding layers of textures and resin  and color.

Watch my new video here below

Materials I used

Stretched canvas about 5 x 7"

ALCOHOL INKS

POLYURETHANE

UV RESIN

LOTS OF GLITTER

ACRYLIC MEDIUM

MICA POWDER OR PIGMENT POWDER

Acrylic Paint Pen Reviews: POSCA paint pens. Worth The Money? Sorry....

Happy Monday! Hard to believe July is half over already and still many of us are under self quarantine life. Yes, we know many have been trying to find their new normal among this unknown nemesis, but many of us are vulnerable and must be over protective, trying to avoid all respiratory illnesses. Thankfully, God is in charge and that means I get to make art and try out new art supplies instead of worrying about illnesses possibilities. Okay, no more Covid talk. It's just part of our new reality. So let's learn what we can do to enjoy time within our 4 walls. Well, hopefully you get outside to inhale some fresh air too. Now, I sound like my dear mom. 'Get some fresher Anita!!"

I have been promising some paint pen reviews and finally after swatching out and photographing and filming, then editing and waiting an hour to upload the short video below, voila! My first review is of the most expensive paint pens I have seen, POSCA. Click here to see the exact link I used to buy these. Which I do not recommend. Watch to see why not. The rest of the reviews to come, will be of affordable paint pens. You won't be disappointed. For now, drumroll please...

Craig Paints Part 3 - Peeks To Progress, Perks To Painting With Chronic Pain

Well Craig is whizzing along faster than I can keep up. Obviously time lapsing his work, would mean hours and hours of footage. So I am doing short interviews and photographing the developing stages!
Welcome to Part 3 From our new "Craig Paints," series. Craig, my husband, shows us that anyone can learn how to create a great painting without any tutorials, formal training or even following the rules LOL.

In todays episode, Craig not only share life in Peggy's Cove (Craig's version), he also share what prompted him to paint. Originally he used watercolour. When he married me, he started dabbling with my leftover acrylic paints. I taught him the tips and tricks to using this fast drying/non-re-usable once dried medium and the rest is history!

He shares a very personal reason why he paints that may encourage others who are in a similar situation as he is.

Finally Friday!: See My Dad's New Art Work!

Painting by R. J. "Bob" Harris, oil on canvas
Childhood Inspiration
Yay, it's Finally Friday! When you grow up in a creative family, you definitely are more likely to be creative yourself. It doesn't mean you won't be an artist if your parents didn't create, it just really helps. My parents always kept me well supplied with art making supplies. I remember before I fell in love with illustrating and painting, I really enjoyed all the craft making kits they would give me. Forgive me if I mentioned this before, but it is how much I loved getting to play around. Everything from wood burning kits, "Dip- It" liquid plastic, rug hooking, Spirograph, Coloured pencils, pints, pastels, plaster of paris, string art, macrame, weaving loom (Dad made me one and a spool knitting spool)...to even a paint by number set! Yes it is a sin now for anyone who paints, but hey it's great fun when you are a kid. So parents, encourage your child's creativity by providing them with art making supplies or anything that can be created with. Heck, I remember enjoying hours at my Grandma Harris' house cutting up styrofoam egg cartons to create teeny ashes and cutlery. Not to mention getting to create crafts with kits she would give me when I hung out there!
And then there's my Mom who taught me about crocheting, embroidery, and sewing. Creativity can be expressed in endless ways!

Dad Share
My Dad!
Wanted to share my Dad's newest painting that he shared wit us! He is an epic landscape painter who prefers oil paint. I like his detailed, layered brushwork. For those of you who don't know oil paint is the coloured pigments combined with oil mediums that make it oil paint. I tried it once and found it difficult because it takes much much longer to dry. The good thing that I liked, that you can re-work areas after. Unlike Acrylic (Water based, plastic like paint) that dries crazy fast. Fine if you know how to keep it wet with a spray bottle but frustrating if you don't.
It is worth buying a small Reeves oil paint set just to try them out. If you haven't decided what you like, you may fall in love with them.
Historically,  many of the famous artists we know of like Monet, Picasso, VanGogh, Kandinsky, Keefe and the Group of Seven, painted with oils. It is fun to learn and try the different paints that exist.
Paint Talk
Water colour and Gouache are the only paints that I know of and have worked with, that can be re-wet once dry. For instance once they dry in your palette, you can spray them with water and rehydrate them to use them some more. Whereas Acrylic, is tricky to keep from drying and then being useless. I and my husband keep them on a plastic plate for a palette, continuously moistened with water spray and stored in a sealed zip type bag. Oil Paints can be set aside during the day, with pretty much no worries about your palette drying out. To store, laying plastic wrap or sealing in a plastic container works too. Give them a try.

POLYMER CLAY SHARE: Christi Friesen! One Of The Rock Stars Of The Poly Clay World!

When I  first began Learning about polymer clay over two years ago,  I mentioned key Artists that I was learning from on the Internet. And one of them, is the rock star of the Polymer clay world (to me any way!) I watched every video I could find by Christi Friesen. Her personality was what appealed most me. She is funny, easy going and at the same time teaches you in a way that makes you feel okay about not making everything perfect. She inspires creativity and never gets boring. Wish I could travel so I can see her in person. But thanks to the internet, there are many ways to feel like I am learning from her "live."Click here to go to Christi's Neighbourhood.

Everyone, go see Christi's work history here!

Well, I am so excited to share this here, at HeArtfully creating...  This week, I had shared a recent article I wrote about our young friend and artist, Luke a.k.a Jonathan Artman, with Christi Friesen because she kindly shared my first article about him last year.
This time, when I saw that I could click on the friend request on her Facebook page, I did. Because I knowing how busy she must be, not to mention how popular and famous she is in the polymer clay world, I definitely did not expect her to respond.  Needless to say I was thrilled when she said yes! And coolest of all, when I wrote and thanked her, well let's just say, she has become a new friend to me - not in the facebook world where you never get to hear back from those we add. We all have friends on our list that we are even biologically related to and yet, they never respond :o(  But an actual friend! She made my day!
If only she knew how happy hearing from her made me! Just ask my husband Craig! I told him it was equal to a movie fan, hearing from say Brad Pitt or Tom Hanks! As I expected, she really is as wonderful as she appears in her interviews and tutorials.  Her clear desire to encourage those of us who want to learn how to work with polymer clay, making it fun and not complicated- has and still is  a huge encouragement to myself and I'm sure many many others!  So thank you so much Christi for blessing the socks off of me! Believe me, 365 days of the year, I wear past the knee, thick, hand knitted socks - so that's a big deal :o)

Below are some links to some tutorials that I know you will enjoy. She said she will be puttng out some new ones. So excited to see them!
