My Art History: Part 1 - Painting

Decided it would be fun to share my personal Art History broken up in parts according to the various media I have got to work with over the course of my life. Part one and two are focused on my number one, main discipline, drawing/illustrating and painting. My hope is to encourage and inspire budding artists of all ages and for those just interested in watching. Who knows, maybe someone will discover they are more creative than they ever realized.

Art Vlog - Paint And Yap! Uncut And Raw, Craig Begins A New Painting And Railway Is Complete!!

Happy 2021 everyone. Hope and pray everyone is well and enjoying amazing weather if you live near us. Warm winters are something I love. However rare they may be.

Craig finally completed his railway painting and gave it to a dear friend. You can see the completed work on the video below!

So he has begun a new landscape scene in acrylic. I was experimenting with his iPhone to see how long it could record a steady stream and it worked well. Told him to regale viewers with his stories/life experiences while he worked.

THE STORY OF MY SHOP "A Bergie Creation"

A closer look at my Etsy Shop Story....
I have been creating ever since I could hold a pencil. As a self taught artist, my main discipline has been Visual. Everything from illustrating, to painting, to graphic design. It didn't hurt that early on inspiration seeds were planted, as I got to see my Dad's colour pastel and oil landscape paintings. Not to mention, my parents always provided me with craft kits and art materials. I remember playing
around with "Dip It" plastic film, wood burning, rug hooking, spirograph, paints, Laurentian Coloured pencils, plaster of paris moulds and figures to paint, spool knitting....oh, the memories.

Out of High School, I was hoping to take our university's Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts program. Sadly, it wasn't fully wheelchair accessible so I was unable to attend. After some employment stints, (not art related), while always drawing and such, I finally decided to enrol at our local College. (about 1989-1991) in Arts Administration. Even though it was a great learning experience, especially since, I got to complete a 4 month internship in fundraising at the Royal W inning Ballet and in the education department at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, I concluded that the management side of the arts just wasn't for me. Creating is in my blood.

It helped that, after obtaining a one year employment contract as the education assistant, while at the Gallery, I was given the opportunity to do just that, create. Better yet, I learned how much I love teaching and inspiring children to make art. Aside from assisting with art lessons,  I also got to teach some cartooning lessons to children. They also let me Illustrate their fundraising cookbook!

Whether in school or working, my entire life has always been spent creating wherever I could, illustrating, painting, sketching - designing whatever and even the few arts and craft projects. I give credit to my dear Grandma Harris, who would have me sleep over at her home when I was a kid and she always had a craft kit for me to put together, if no kit, there were styrofoam egg cartons and other materials to cut up and make something from.

Aside from my usual creating projects, learning the new age of computer desk top publishing became a new passion. Again, self taught, I was hired to work on a local small publication doing layout and design. That lead to the inception of a small coffee paper, called Superior Coffee Talk. A friend did all the leg work, seeking out advertisers and shops that she would then deliver to. It was great fun to work on designing and publishing a fun little paper for a quick read during a comforting cup of joe.

In the late 1980s, I forgot to mention that I was blessed with receiving my first solo exhibition in the
Pictograph Art Gallery in Atikokan, Ontario. The subject back then, reflected my heart at the time, fashion illustration. And...about twenty years later (about 1998), thanks to our university finally becoming fully wheelchair accessible, I enrolled part time in that HBFA program and honed my composition, design, painting, drawing and printmaking skills. Not to mention, receiving great inspiration by being able to learn a tonne in a couple of art history classes as well as, being selected to participate in a few "Lakehead University's juried art exhibitions."

In 2001, I was blessed yet again, with falling in love and marrying my now husband, Craig.

About nine years ago, I was blessed with an Ontario Art Council "New Works" Grant. The theme was "All Creation Sings." My inspiration was to paint God's creation in whatever manner inspired me. The paintings were in acrylic and the subject matter included fruit, flowers and vegetables. Inspired by Georgia O'Keefe, I too feel that you can't just look at something like a flower at a distance or as a whole. It is when you look very closely that you can seen amazing details that most people miss. That is basically how to best describe my paintings.

On my own, working on some meaningful polymer clay figures.

To some up my Etsy Shop Story.....
Creating has always been in my DNA, my blood, if you will. It is too difficult for me to focus on just writing a story about my shop, because there is so much more. The actual online shop was a practical decision for me. In that, due to being physically challenged, I am unable to travel and do things like sell my work at Markets or do the "leg" work seeking vendors. When I saw what Easy offered, it was a perfect opportunity to  sell my work.

Drawing, Illustrating, Painting, design work and such, have always been my number one focus. It wasn't until 2008, when a spontaneous, practical need, prompted my dive into designing and making jewelry! I love it, but like my always bouncing brain, my ideas lead to changes in materials and designs, so nothing is ever the same way. Well, the only consistent design, is my number one seller, "The MINI Collection" small hoop earrings.

Most recently, my newest creative tool has become polymer clay. Love the fell, the colour and the endless possibilities. For more details about me personally, please feel free to check out my blogs and YouTube Channel.

For me, making jewelry has been like painting with wire and beads and most recently, polymer clay!

A SIDE NOTE:  Please, if you have children, encourage them to create. Always have art making materials available. No, you don't have to spend lots of money, just paper and pens and pencils, crayons...pressing flowers, leaves in pages, cutting, glueing, pasting....I think you get the idea. And remember, don't tell them that sky's aren't purple or green, if they colour it that way (I say that because I really did hear a parent say that to their child once, it was so painful to hear and watch)...there are no rules when it comes to kids and art. It should never be a painful process, if they aren't enjoying themselves, then, don't force them.

Inspired By More Flowers...

Just wanted to show you the video I just made to share some more about just how inspiring flowers Georgia O'Keefe knew that, take a look at some of her beautiful paintings. It was because of her, that I even thought of painting close-ups of these most colourful blooms. Check out this Kid's activity page on Pinterest about Georgia's work.
Leon checking out my unfinished painting.
have been in my artistic life. You'll see a few of the hundreds of photos of those flowers I took. Oh, I forgot to say, that some of the flowers, I even planted from seeds just so I could be inspired when they grew up! If you want to know how to be inspired try looking at flowers in a really close way. God didn't want us to just pass them by.

Poppies....So Inspiring

Poppy slices I made from polymer clay.
God's Creation
I love flowers and I love creating. It only made sense to learn how to make my favourite flower out of
From our garden
fabric, then they wouldn't die like all flowers have to do. Below are a couple of photos of the gorgeous blooms we are blessed with year after year that inspired me to create.

You can see why I would want to try to have these flowers in our home all year round. As you will see, creating two dimensional poppies is one of my favourite things to do. Including recently, as I have been learning how to use polymer clay. To the right, after watching many YouTube tutorials, I figured out how to make a "Poppy" cane out of polymer clay. (I will be writing more about polymer cane making in the future.) For now, I just wanted to share these photos so you can see what we can create when we are inspired by God's creation.
Our garden
Inspired to Create
Most of us are inspired to create because of others who create. God being Thee number one Creator, His creation is perfect. We are created in His image, so it makes sense to me that we love creating. His creation has inspired me my entire life. It is important to use your eyes, and other senses to seek out things that stir your creativity.

Capture Inspiration
I suggest that if you see anything that stirs your heart to create, take pictures of it so you have them to refer to when you are ready to create. Ideally, if you can draw or paint outside, in real life, instead of using a photograph, then go for it. Whether you choose to draw it, paint it, sculpt, use textiles like fabric, thread, yarn, knitting, stitchery, cut it out in paper... in polymer clay like I have done already or whatever method you want, create away. The methods we can use to make art or create, is endless. I receive my inspiration from looking at what other artists do as well as whatever God makes.
Photography itself is not only a great way to record images you can create from, but it is also a way to express yourself creatively. Photos themselves are works of art.
My Poppies...Painted
Since this is about Poppies, as you will see Poppies are one of my most favourite sources of inspiration.
The poppy flowers we grew from seeds to plants that return yearly in our garden, inspire me to take tonnes of photos and the photos inspire me to paint and draw and now make using polymer clay and in fabric.
Over the last twenty to thirty years as an artist, I use to only paint and draw poppies in two dimensions. Two dimensions means the art work has height and width. I wanted to share some of those paintings with you so you can see just how one flower inspires to create. And then I will show you how the poppy also has inspired me to creating it in three dimensional form. Three dimensions are what we are, we have height, width and depth. Ever been to a 3D movie?

My Poppies in Three Dimension

I love oriental poppies and wanted to try to learn how to make my own in fabric. When I first started out, I made a couple as hair ornaments using fabric.
This poppy was made using satin and beads sewn in place.

Ready for Lift Size Poppies
After some research I was blessed with the idea to make life size poppies to decorate our home. Take a look...if I can make these, you can too.
They were made using taffeta fabric, a lot of tea lights and matches to melt the edges of the petals. The centre part of the poppy, was constructed using a cotton ball stuffing that has been packed into a stitched circle of fabric including a layer of organza for sparkle and a stretchy black jersey, then tightened and stitched to form, a flat orb, think tangerine or persimmons. To make the pie slice like sections, I jammed a thick darning needle down the centre of the orb with a thin black cord and came back out and back in around and around until the centre was looking similar to a real poppy centre. The black fuzzy stamens in a real oriental poppy are velvet and fluffy. Mine were made with a lot of hot glue gun blisters as I glued pieces of whatever thinnish black string or cording I could find all around the underside of the "orb" centre.

A LOT of hot glue was used...Oh right, the petals were secured with the hot glue and a long 18 gauge floral stem was connected to the center part. Once it was all where I wanted it to be, I needed to buy and cut thin wooden dowels for stability. To make the stems look more stem like, I wrapped them in green floral tape.
Bouquet number one sits in our living area. Red is such a nice pop of colour.

Can you see the divided section in the centre.
Here is one out of two bouquet's that I made. So rewarding and beautiful.

SO MUCH FUN!

This project was so much fun. Even when something is time consuming, if you love it, you'll do it.

The size of the flowers across, are about ten inches. I have noticed that keeping the petals from drooping is tricky. Anyone have any ideas? let me know. :o)
