Needle Felting Adventure: Creating That Is Easier On The Hands (Sort Of)

Needle felted hearts by me, Anita of HeArtfully Creating/A Bergie Creation 2017
Never heard of Needle Felting? Neither had I until recently. Thanks to You Tube's great tutorials and endless information, I decided I would try it. Wet felting is the other method of felting but for me, it looks pretty physical so I wanted to try using the needle way. It is such a relaxing way to create. Yes, it involves a barbed needle that hurts a lot when poked into your fingers! BUT, if you actually use the little finger protectors that come with a needle felting kit, you can avoid pain.
What Does It Mean To Felt?
Here is what I have concluded based on what I know so far. Felting in my words, involves connecting fibres like wool (not spun yarn) into each other until they connect or meld into each other creating a sheet of fabric or some three dimensional forms such as my hearts below, animals (remember my first kitty attempt?) or garments like hats, slippers, scarves and such. Needle felting involved poking a special barbed or teeny jaggged edged needle through the fibres joining them together. The more you poke through, the firmer the finished product gets.
Wet felting, involves soap and water and quite a process, look below to see a video about it.
Easier On The Hands
Yes, Polymer clay is wonderful but I have been struggling with the strength needed to condition and work it, especially when it is cold. Because I have a muscle weakening disorder, having ways to create on those challenging, other than drawing, something like felting on weaker days is great. So if you have arthritis or a neuromuscular disease like I do, and you love three dimensional art making but struggle with polymer clay, try needle felting.

STUDIO LIFE: What I've Been Creating This Week....Week 22 Polymer Clay Challenge

Had a visit from little Humphrey in my studio/house
this week....too bad I am allergic :o(
Good day! Summer is almost officially here and in our Northwestern Ontario City, summer weather is lagging behind. I hope wherever you are that the weather is just the way you like it. For me it is
Polymer Clay Puffy Hearts and Jewelry by me! Anita Berglund
basically the only time of year when I find it warm enough to go outside. It doesn't really matter to me anyway because I am always creating in my studio. I tried working outside before and the winds, dust and all that fun stuff, interferes with my art making too much. Polymer clay especially picks up dust and dirt really easy. Below I have share some clean clay tips as well as some of the pieces I worked on this week! Have fun!!

Keeping It Clean
If you are working in polymer clay you may already know this, if not, now you will! Something I have learned over time, especially from the many great online polyclay artists. If you want your clay pieces to be professional enough to sell or just because you want them to look their best, you must keep the clay clean.  This means....
1. Make sure your work area, hands and surface as well as tools are all wiped super clean. I use rubbing alcohol or baby wipes. Be cautious because some wipes have fibres that can come off and end up on any of these items.
2. Work in a pet free zone. Animal hair can float anywhere including right onto your clay working area. Unless you want to incorporate it, try to keep your area a pet free zone. If not, make sure you wipe it all down prior to working.
3. After your piece is assembled, you can clean off your unbaked clay with a cotton swab or clean cotton/soft cloth and rubbing alcohol prior to baking/firing in the oven.
4. If you baked the piece and missed a speck of dirt (this can be particularly annoying with white clay!), I have learned that you can use nail polish remover. I have never tried it. If you do, let me know how it went. It isn't something I want to depend on so I try to keep everything clean before baking.
Hope that helps a little.
Keep it Clean!

Anita :o)

STUDIO LIFE: What I've Been Working On This Week?

It's been a fast paced spring so far trying to complete polymer clay designs for my online Etsy Shop. That's why sharing links with your friends and family, always helps out artists like me! Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, Hint, hint ;o)
Since HeArtfully Creating is about creating and encouraging minds of all ages to create, I thought it made sense to share what I've been working on for weeks now. If you follow this blog, you know I have a shop online with  Etsy called, A Bergie Creation. As most fashion accessories do, there are seasonal pieces. Well, I am a visual artist and not a merchandise expert, but I do want to offer new jewelry pieces in my shop each season and between. One thing I have been learning is that, it takes so much time for me to create my pieces from beginning to end, that I am not getting them completed in time. Of course that is just in my mind. So I have accepted that fact and am steadily working on my designs, finishing them up and then designing pieces of wearable art with them! And once they are complete, then to offer the best photos possible for potential customers to see, I literally take hundreds of photos, then edit the best ones and format them for my shop. As well, marketing your shop is important, hence blogs and social media.

Since the process is part of the fun, I thought I would try to post more Studio Life, In Process photos and blog articles. So below are some more puffy heart pendants and charms or dangles that I have been working on this week. And here is the link to my A Bergie Creation, shop blog.

I would love to hear from you if you have requests, questions, thoughts or comments. Make sure you always enjoy creating!
