Polymer Clay Journey: A PractiCLAY Project- Lantern Tutorial

Welcome to a A practiCLAY project. (practical, get it? :o)

Can't deal with bright lights in the middle of the night? I can't. But my husband helps me to get comfortable and needs to be able to see. (If you don't know, I use a wheelchair because of a neuromuscular disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy). So, I had a Problem to solve? How did I solve it? Well, I love working in polymer clay. I have translucent premo polymer clay, twinkle lights with batteries and a switch and ways to colour and decorate, so let's make a dim light in clay!

Watch the Video Tutorial Right Below:

Polymer Clay Journey: Practical Projects - DIY Cord Holders

In these modern times we may  have cordless devices everywhere, but have you noticed all the cords we still need? All devices still require cords to charge. And then there are all our other tangled web of electrical cords. Always looks messy, right? Wanting to make some sort of method to contain them, the idea came to use paper towel or toilet paper rolls and/or small metal cylinders wrapped in wax paper, to create a spring action coil. A way to easily get the cords to slip inside and be contained, using a neat and artistic method.
Watch Video Below!
You can see in the video below, the shape of the cord holders.

How I Made Them:
It is pretty easy. Roll out a long thick cylinder or sausage (depends on how long you want your holder ), and flatten it out by rolling it out by rolling a texture plate or roller (see my original texture makers). Don't make it too thin or they won't be strong enough.

I decorated the surface with mica powders. Then I laid the pieces on a designated baking pan on top of kleenex that I puff up. As well, you can use polyester fiber fill. Then your pieces will not get a flat spot.

Bake at 275F if using Premo. Always bake all items for at least one hour, it makes them stronger.  Let cool. Remember polymer clay is a plastic, not hard like earthen clay.

Special Holder Design in the video
You will see this holder in the video that is not a coil shape. For this one, I cover a metal cannoli form with wax paper and then wrapped a square sheet of clay in
a diamond fashioned. Leaving the corner that overlaps the clay free and laying a piece of wax paper between the end corner section and where it over laps. Then I baked it and before it was fully cooled, I carefully pulled it off the form and removed the wax paper between the clay layer. The cords slip in by just gently pulling the end corner away from the under part  and pushing the cords inside. It is just another practical way to organize your jumbled cords. I made smaller and large ones. Depends on the thickness of your cord sizes.

Hope you give it a try. Let me know how it goes.

INSIDE MY STUDIO: What Have I Been Up To?

Hello! Just wanting to share some pics to share what I have been having fun with lately. One thing was coming up with a practical way to use my polymer clay to help hold in a bundle of electrical and computer cords. I will do more on that in he future. But want to share some fun stuff now! Hope you have been finding inspiration and creating!

Practical Polymer Clay Projects: Make Your Own Tools

Hi guys! It has been a whirlwind week. Had great plans to get a few new blogs out by today. But, as many of you know taking photos of your work while you work, editing the photos - especially when you're like me and take at least 200 photos for every couple of items made. Actually, when I was just transferring photos just for this project alone, there was at least 500 photos. You can see why I turn them into videos to document my work. No one would want to look all of those photos in a blog post!

Practical polymer clay project: texturing tools
I am just trying to post this before I hit the hay, so I won't say too much right now. But I did want to show some photos before Friday ends.

With polymer clay and sewing needles, and a 26 gauge wire threaded through the eye of the needles, I grouped  them together and then formed polymer clay around them. I have to thank my Mandarin ducky, Anikko, for that idea. Take a look.

Then I made my own craft knife so that I can use up some spare tiny blades that were leftover, when a cheap craft knife broke within one month. Again wrapping wire so the clay had something to grab onto, I made my own detail knife. As well, I made a double knife so I can make Little strips of clay. I thought it was kind of cool. Take a look at these.

The loopy thing/ tool, was created from an idea I saw somewhere on the Internet, sorry I can't remember where... They took a guitar string and made a loop and formed it into a sculpting tool. This is a necklace cable that I used instead. No guitars here!

Everyone have a great weekend! Lord willing, I would posting more detail Photos and articles this weekend. Wait till you see the new textured polymer clay pieces I have been working on all week :o)

Practical Polymer Clay Project: DIY Spool Knitting Spools

Hi guys! A couple months ago I was really wanting to spool knit. There is article about that here. Since making my own spools seemed do-able, I did. Mind you, I focused on smaller ones that would hold 3-8 stitches so then, I could knit pieces that would work as cords for pendants or as necklace pieces on their own.  As you can see in the photos below, I added beads to some prior to beginning the knit. It worked out really well. How did I make my spools you ask? Well, if haven't already guessed by the title, with Polymer Clay and some other items. Here, let me explain....

Materials Needed To This Build Practical Polymer Clay Project:
๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—Scrap polymer clay or canes, whatever you want to your spools to look like.
18 gauge or really hard wire, I used German Nickel silver and I tried making some with bobby pins.
A couple pairs of pliers and wire cutters
toilet paper tubes or a strong cardboard base to work  from.
scissors
Masking Tape
Now What?
Foundation: I cut the toilet paper tubes to a bit larger than I wanted. In the case where I only wanted four stitches or for prongs, I rolled it small, about3/4 of an inch across. Lengthwise, I cut it about two inches long or less.
Prongs: I tried a couple ways. So do your own thing. I will tell you what worked for me. I cut wire pieces and bent them in half, the I curled at least one end a bit so it would bake into the clay. Once I have all four prongs shaped (keeping one side a bit longer,) then I masked them into position on my cylinder on the outside.
Hold the ends down with tape.
Clay Time: okay now my schools are quite abstract looking because I just sliced from scratch Clay and in some cases I used Canes that I didn't really like. So it is up to you if you want your school to look spectacular or you don't care I need just want to use up some clay that is lying around. Remember for me this was the first time ever trying this, so it's one turned out differently. But the one that has the German silver wire you can tell because there's silver wire showing. Once the cylinder and problems are taped into position, making sure they are evenly spaced apart, I just started covering the cylinder what's Clay. Then keep in mind when you're holding the clay on the outside, you want to think of what is comfortable for your hands to be holding on while you spool knit. As you can see by some of my examples they are rounded up at the top and narrow down below, Like send out you are the same.

Have fun this is an inexpensive way to create a very practical polymer clay project that can enable you to make some really cool things such as necklace cords with  dimension, cool polymer clay pendant and you'll have quite a unique necklace. Or like I said you can just put a class on one of these spool knitted records and have a simple yeah it really cool necklace or bracelet.
I hope to get something together soon so I can show you.

Make sure you kind of wrap the clay in between the prongs and ideally, down inside the cylinder as well. I think it works better if you could get Clay on the inside and the outside. You will be leaving the toilet paper tube or cardboard foundation inside there. You may have a better way this is just what I did. I would love to hear from you are hurtfully creating Facebook page and see pictures if you try this or you have a better idea just click here to go . See our page.
All Done Now What?
Well once you have all of your spools made, it is time to bake them in a 275 degree Fahrenheit of it. Now I am using sculptey/Premo products , as well, I sometimes mix in FIMO, but I still mix it the 275 Fahrenheit and it seems to be fine. FIMO has a lower baking temperature, but it is never dominant in my work, always combined with Premo. Big time at least one hour for strength.
I actually started out trying a couple first then moving on to making more trying different materials such as bobby pins for prongs, so that it is up to you.
About the prongs: I did discover that bending back the prongs once it was all baked, made using it to knit, much easier.

Another Practical Polymer Clay Project Tool:
Above is a needle, Actually a darning needle that I added polymer clay to in order to make a tool to help do spool knitting. You need a device to help lift the wire, string, or yarn up and over those little prongs.
How do I make that you ask?
I used a darning needle. Then I slipped some wire into the eye of the needle and crinkled up the wire a little, so the clay would have something to bake onto and not fall out. Then shaped the clay however you want it to feel in your hand, bake it at the same temperature as above, again about an hour and voila! A cool practical polymer clay project tool!
 Bobby Pins?
Yes below is the school that I made using bobby pins. I tried it as a spool and it worked okay, I got the idea from another tutorial somewhere on YouTube, sorry I can't remember where. I even saw people use popsicle sticks if you're making larger spools.
See!
Here are just some of the examples of the really cool necklace/cords that I made using my handmade spools. The red and silver one I worked a metallic thread and a thin nylon cord, together to achieve a bit of a sparkly look. The Turquoise blue one is a wax cord about 1 mm in thickness, and then I added on beads before I began knitting.

Hope you enjoyed this article! Again, I would love to see photos of your work. Just click here to go to HeArtfully Creating Facebook Page, where are you can share photos ideas and if you have any questions, I Love to hear them.

Practical Polymer Clay Project: Happy Dad's Day - Gift Idea - A Hybrid Faux Stone "DAD" Key Ring

2016- Faux stone from polymer clay - key chain for my Dad made by me!
Yah, I know it is the day after of D-Day (Dad's Day), but I still want to share what I tried to create for my Dad. He loves rocks. In fact he and my sister have risked life and limb to get some good rocks via Lake Superior. (Hope I got that right)
When you want to make a gift for someone, it helps to try to focus on coming up with an idea based on what  you know the gift receiver likes. It just makes it more meaningful and might please them. Mind you, anything handmade from a friend or family member, is always meaningful!
Faux Stone or as my mom calls it "Fox" Stone, means "fake" in English. Faux is a French word.
Rock, Stone, Gemstone?
When you want to try to make your clay to look like a specific surface, such as faux stone It is best of
course to have a reference point to look at. Or just make it up. That is what I did. Nope, I just worked from my memory and instead of getting a Jasper stone surface, I have a hybrid, (made my own kind) a cross between granite and jasper.   Here are some samples of granite and jasper types. As I looked them up, I was inspired to try more re-creation in poly clay.  As well, below are some great links about other stone types as well. Be inspired....
Click this link to learn more about granite.
Click Here to See Rock Types
Click here to see the many varieties of Stone including gemstones

I am sorry I didn't take any how to or works in progress photos. But,  here are the basics incase you might be inspired to try making a personalized key chain.
What I Did
1. Smooshing Colours:
We all know what it means to smoosh right? As an artist, colour mixing is one of my favourite things to do in the art making process. When I use paint, I use a paintbrush. But when I work in polymer clay, I smoosh. That means to take the colours you want to combine to get another colour, like blue and red make purple or red and green make brown...and mix it together until the colours are well combined into the colour you want.
Depending on the kind of colours used for mixing, your end results may surprise you. If it isn't what you wanted, do not give up. Keep adding and subtracting. I don't do this, but I know other clay artists who like to keep records of "colour recipes." Where you might either make a sample of the colours you used and how much of each, to result in the colour you wanted.
This works well, if you want to get the exact same mixed colour every time. Maybe it is the visual artist in me, but, I like to eye ball it. Mind you, that means I never seem to get the same colour twice. As well, I often run out if the project is large. So mental note to self, "make sure I mix A LOT of the colour I need.
2. Colours used? In this project, my goal was to create rock like surface. That means I then took the colours I "smooshed" together, made ropes, thick, thin or use chunks of colours I thought might make a great faux stone look. Then do some smooshing, or twisting and folding and twisting. The goal is to marbel-ize the clay, creating that rock look. Be careful not too over smoosh the colours or else you may cross the line from marbleizing and effects to a whole new colour mix.
3. Shaping It. In this instance, my goal was to make a personalized key ring for my Dad. So, it makes sense that I wanted it to spell "DAD." My husband had the idea to cut "DAD," out of the clay instead of making each letter and trying to connect them into one piece. I tried Craig's idea and that is what worked.
You can shape it how ever you want.
4. Armature or Support: I forgot to say that if you want your piece to be extra strong, you can place a sturdy 18 gauge wire inside the piece. This piece has a wire running through some of it to strengthen it. At least I think I did. My memory is a tad foggy.
5. Texturizing: Once you have the shape you want, then it is time to create a rock surface.
2016- Faux stone from polymer clay -
key chain for my Dad made by me!

Some rocks are polished and shiny. Natural rocks usually are never polished and shiny. For my keychain, I wanted the stone to look as if it was hand cut or carved and then ground down to a semi smooth surface. How to texturize a stone surface. You can use an old toothbrush, sandpaper (just push rough sandpaper onto the clay surface. You can use a needle or pointy tool and literally dab the clay until it looks how you want. I used a spiral bristle tool that looks like a giant mascara brush.
6. Rings and Do Dads: I wanted to embellish the clay to make it interesting. Using a drop of liquid polymer clay, I set in a steampunk gear and poked some details into the clay. As well, I needed a place to suspend the key ring attachment so, I inserted a large metal steampunk gear ring.
Also, while the clay was unbaked, I added some light touches od shimmery mica powder for fun and pizazz.
7. Finishing Touch Ups. Once the clay is baked according to package directions on a
2016- Faux stone from polymer clay - key chain for my Dad made by me

ceramic tile, tented with a foil piece or foil cake pan and it is cooled completely. You can sand it a little and buff it up a bit. Or leave it as it is...or you can use a polymer clay compatible glaze in the finish you want. I used a renaissance wax to protect it.
7. Gift It!
